"Tsubasa and Roberto" (対抗戦へ向けて, Taikousen e Mukete) is the fourth episode of the 2018 Captain Tsubasa series. It was originally broadcast on April 24th, 2018.
Synopsis[]
The jersey #10, the desired number for a footballer. Roberto shows Tsubasa his old tricot from the time he played for Brazil, so Tsubasa gets all excited and says, "One day, I will become a player of the Japanese national team and will fight the world!" Roberto makes a strange gesture, halfway between happy for Tsubasa but at the same time as if he were somewhere else with his thoughts. On top of their desk, there is an envelope for Roberto, coming from the university hospital. Tsubasa's mother takes a peek at the envelope because she got worried and now knows the shocking truth.
Plot[]
Tsubasa heads off to attend his first day at school and is seen off by Roberto and his mother. Roberto mentions that Tsubasa's skills may not improve as well in Nankatsu then Shutetsu. However, Natsuko assures Roberto that Tsubasa is happy there as he's already made so many new friends.
Roberto looks at a letter about his medical diagnosis report on a desk from the university hospital he goes to. A flashback showing, Roberto displaying his #10 jersey from his soccer days to Tsubasa. Inspired by this, Tsubasa proclaims, "One day, I will become a player of the Japanese national team and will fight the world!"
In the present, Ryo boasts to his fellow students about his team's win against Nishigaoka elementary school. His fellow teammates also chime in explaining Tsubasa's exploits and reveal their new coach Roberto. Soon, Tsubasa arrives and is later formally introduced in his homeroom class. During his introduction, Tsubasa details that his soccer ball on his person is his "friend" and Ryo exclaims that Tsubasa is a new player in his soccer team. Inspired by Tsubasa's friendship with his ball, a girl in the class named Sanae proposes the call watch the team practice after school.
An assembly is held involving all of the sports teams to discuss the inter-school tournament. Afterward, the sports teams all practice in earnest, and a quintuple of students lead by Sanae prepare to cheer on Tsubasa and his soccer team.
Meanwhile, back in Tsubasa's home, Natsuko finds Roberto's medical diagnosis report on his ophthalmology. She reads it and is shocked by its contents. We hear a monologue by Roberto that's his letter to his former captain in Brazil about his retinal detachment. Furthermore, Roberto details his plans to stay in Japan a little longer. He also mentions Tsubasa in his letter and in the present meets up with him in the soccer field. Sanae and her group are introduced to Roberto as the Nankatsu Cheering Group with Sanae being the "Boss".
To start things off, a game is held with Tsubasa vs. the Nankatsu team. Of course, Tsubasa's exemplary soccer skills shock and awe everyone watching and playing. It's keen to note that Sanae especially was impressed by Tsubasa's play. With the practice match over, Roberto proceeds to train the team.
Elsewhere, Genzo diligently trains his goalkeeping skills as his mentor Tatsuo oversees it. Later that afternoon, the Nankatsu soccer team, except Tsubasa were exhausted by Roberto's strenuous practice training. This leads Sanae to chastise the team except for Tsubasa for their flaccid display.
On their way home, Roberto promises Tsubasa that he'll personally train him in soccer every day at 5:00 a.m. each and every morning.
