This is the section about Genzo Wakabayashi's techniques in the Captain Tsubasa series.

Techniques[]

Abilities[]

  • Captainship and leadership: Being a keeper, Wakabayashi can give good instruction to the defense line, about either which opponents should be marked or which position should be taken. He used to be Hamburger Jr.'s captain when Schneider wasn't available[1]. He can give advices to a teammate during the match.

  • Judgement: Wakabayashi has good judgment, allowing him to foresee the opponent's play to take the initiative while defending. This also allows him to have good positioning.
  • Reflexes: Wakabayashi earned his superb reflexes from his intense training.
  • SGGK[2]: Wakabayashi's distinctive characteristic is to be able to stop any kind of shot kicked from outside of the penalty area, which earned him the epithet of Super Great Goal Keeper.

Goalkeeping skills[]

  • Coming out of his goal: He can show nice judgement by coming out of his goal, anticipating a long kick from many opponents, allowing him to perfectly block a jumping volley with both hands[3], can come out of his goal for a one on one, and might be too late to prevent Schneider from shooting but can take his fire shot on the face, deviating it on the goal bar[4], can come out of his goal for a one on one, Kaltz can try to trick him with a lob, but he can come back and repell it with his hat, conceding a corner kick[5].

Wakabayashi's Kick Save

  • Fake Throw: Wakabayashi can fake a hand throw towards the playmaker to send a long kick towards a forward instead.
  • Long kick: Also called Long Shot. Wakabayashi can use this for a counterattack when he's in ball possession and even go for a scoring attempt. He can score against Nankatsu's keeper with a long shot on a centering from Taki[6], but Wakashimazu seemed confident in stopping his long shot, although it can be deviated by Misaki[7].
  • Overlapping: When acting as a sweeper-keeper, Wakabayashi sometimes goes up to attack, with or without the ball. He can overlap during a corner kick, or in key moments of the match. He does this to have more options available to attack, or even to exploit a weak point.

Naturally, this can also create a weak point in the team's defense if the overlapping player isn't coming back on time[8].

Saves[]

  • Diving Catch: The ability to fly towards the ball, either catching it before or while diving. He can stop with a two handed Diving Catch a fire shot from Schneider from outside of the penalty area in the J Boys' Challenge arc.
  • Diving Header: By coming out of the penalty area, Genzo can dive horizontally towards the ball and hit it with the head, forseeing an incoming attack from Schneider and Schester[8].
  • Kick Save: A deflection using a sharp kick. Works against shots with low trajectories on either side. He managed to kick a rugby ball with it and also he's able to use this when he cannot reach an incoming ball with his hands.
  • One-Handed Catch: Wakabayashi can stop a number of shots with only one hand, thanks to his reflexes and grip.
  • Triangle Jump: Wakabayashi is able to mimick Wakashimazu's trademark technique in J Boys' Challenge arc, using it in the final match against Germany Jr.
    • Double Triangle Jump: Instead of using only the goalpost, Wakabayashi can jump off the post first and then immediately off the crossbar to reach the ball.

Passes[]

  • Counterattack pass: He can throw the ball to a teammate that can reach a teammate for a counterattack.
  • Curled Pass: A pass with spin on the ball which will make it change direction.
  • Top Spin Pass: A pass with an effect in which the speed of the ball increases after it bounces. First used in Road to 2002, against FC Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

Defensive techniques[]

  • Forward Somersault Block: A block performed when the ball is low in the air by kicking it with the heel while coming out of a forward somersault. Its fierce sidespin trajectory makes hard for a counter. He is seen using this technique as an alternative to protect his injured hands. He successfully repelled the aerial shots of the Khongsawat brothers.
  • Uppercut Defense: A technique Wakabayashi acquired from his boxing training in order to defend against the Levin Shot without getting injured by its rotation effect. This technique is performed by using an uppercut to defend.
  • Straight Defense: A technique Wakabayashi acquired from his boxing training in order to defend against the Levin Shot without getting injured by its rotation effect. This technique aims to hit and clear the ball from the side just in front of the goal line with a powerful straight punch.

Cooperative tactics[]

  • Birdcage: A rather controversial tactic used to waste time. The team just circulates the ball in a part of the field, making it difficult for opponents players to take the ball back.

Anime-exclusive techniques[]

Telepathy Saving

  • Sixth Sense: An intuition skill, which allows Genzo to guess the ball's direction by the sound and air movement by closing his eyes. This was used effectively against Schneider both in the anime and the movies, countering the young kaiser's special techniques, such as the Best Shot, Feint Shot, and the Mirage Shot, respectively.
