Gakuto Igawa (井川 岳人, Igawa Gakuto) is a player of Japan's Olympic team and an ex-member of Real Japan 11.

Description[]

Igawa first appears in Golden 23 ch.33 "Rumor from Germany". He is also the younger brother of Hayato Igawa, captain of Japan. He initially wears the jersey #32 as a newcomer and then #5 after Hiroshi Jito's injury against U-22 Denmark. Jito later reclaims his original number and Igawa then moves to #2, vacated by the Tachibana twins.

Back when he was in the Real Japan 11, Gakuto claimed to be a natural all rounder who possesses all — power, speed, technique and even goalkeeping ability, and tried to show that to others. However, that was just him showing more than what he was really capable of, in order to hide his weaknesses. Despite that, Kozo Kira remarked that Gakuto does indeed have qualities to be an all rounder, he only never had a chance to develop those as he always run away whenever his flaws are exposed without actually playing while being true to himself.

History[]

Prior to Golden-23[]

Gakuto made bluffs since he didn't want to be compared to his brother and didn't want to show his weaknesses. One of those weaknesses is mentality. He tended to lose his confidence quite easily, and when his flaws were seen by someone, he ran away from the Real Japan 11 to go to Argentina, start living in the city Buenos Aires at a young age and try to become a professional player in that country. However, everything went wrong - he didn't show his true potential and ended up playing in Argentina's second division; his Argentinian wife Katherine died while giving birth and he became a single father to his little daughter Lisa Igawa.

Golden-23 arc[]

Assistant coach Minato Gamo went to find him to ask him to join U-22 Japan and Gakuto eventually accepted.

The Golden-23 arc features Igawa as he struggles to overcome his weaknesses and give a critical contribution to Japan's hopes of going to the Olympics. In order to concentrate in his football performance and fully dedicate to the Japanese training camp, his older brother Hayato Igawa and his wife offered to take care of little Lisa Igawa while staying in Japan.

Rising Sun arc[]

He is now a regular defender for the Olympic Japan team.
