Golluvate (ゴルバテ) or Gentile (ジェンティーレ) is an Italian player introduced in the Captain Tsubasa manga series.

He is called by two different names in the manga, and each of those names is mistakenly assigned a different position - Gentile plays as a wing forward, while Golluvate is a defender. This mistake - mostly associated with the name Gentile - is later carried over to various media, such as Captain Tsubasa 3109 Nichi Zenkiroku (which gives Gentile the jersey #12 instead of the #9 seen in the manga).

Gentile is a different character from the defender Salvatore Gentile or the eponymous forward from the game Captain Tsubasa J: Get in the Tomorrow, although the latter appears to be inspired in Gentile's position combined with Salvatore physical appearance with a different personality.

Description[]

He was one of the players of Italy Jr. Youth who faced Japan Jr. Youth in the 1st International Jr. Youth Tournament in France.

Etymology[]

History[]

J Boys' Challenge[]

In the beginning, Italy had two scheduled friendly match, against Werder Bremen and Japan. However, as they saw Japan's loss against Bremen, they decided that Japan was not a worthy opponent to play against. This angered Tsubasa Ozora, as he got past all players of Italy, one of which was wearing the jersey #12, before scoring against Gino Hernandez with his Drive Shot.

By chance, Italy's first opponent in the group stage was Japan. Gentile, with the back number 9, had one notable play in this match - after running on the right side in an open space to get a long pass, he managed to trick Ryo Ishizaki with a fake move based feint, then sent a centering towards Tardelli.

As Golluvate, he also had some plays, most of those were defensive ones against Tsubasa or Taro Misaki.

Mistakes and inconsistencies[]

  • Per Captain Tsubasa 3109 Nichi Zenkiroku, Gentile's number is 12. However, in the actual manga and in Shin Captain Tsubasa, he actually uses the jersey number 9, which corresponds to Golluvate in Captain Tsubasa 3109 Nichi Zenkiroku and in other parts of the manga.[1][2] In fact, no number 12 appears playing in that match in the manga or in the OVA and this is a mistake by Takahashi.
  • What looks to be two bench players, a number 12 and an unknown number 17, appear in the original manga when Tsubasa challenges Italy Jr. Youth alone.[3] This appears to be the basis for Gentile's mention in Captain Tsubasa 3109 Nichi Zenkiroku which in turn is the basis for his inclusion in Captain Tsubasa: Gekito no Kiseki. But no number 12 or 17 appear in any of the anime adaptations.
  • While no actual number can be seen in the brief cameo of Gentile in Captain Tsubasa J, the silhouette that can be seen seems to point out to number 9.
  • In the 2001 anime, his role in the manga and the OVA is replaced by a generic looking player with number 4 (probably meant to be Federico)[4].

Trivia[]

  • The name Golluvate is translated into Golbate in various media.
  • Golluvate is named Andrea Golluvate in Get in the Tomorrow, while Gentile is the J version of Salvatore Gentile in said game.
  • A posible explanation for his name is that his first name is Gentile and his last name Golluvate.
