"On their Way to the Inter-School Tournament" (対抗戦へ向けて, Taikousen e Mukete) is the fifth episode of the 2018 Captain Tsubasa series. It was originally broadcast on May 01, 2018.

Synopsis[]

In preparation for the game against Shutetsu, Tsubasa trains every morning with Roberto. When Tsubasa and the rest of Nankatsu find out that Genzo and the others have a practice game, they head there to watch them. Their team is full of great players, including Genzo, Izawa, Kisugi, Taki, Takasugi, and more. Tsubasa gets really excited after seeing how good the players are. Seeing Tsubasa like that motivates Ishizaki and the others! So they start their morning training together and walk to school while dribbling their ball, with the motto "the ball is my friend".

Plot[]

A young boy named Misaki plays a football game on a grassy field by a lake with his friends while his father paints a painting. Once he finishes, Misaki's father tells Taro it's time to leave as his friends are saddened to see him leave as he's transferring to another school. This is because of his father's work as a painter and Misaki has apparently transferred to over 30 different schools in his elementary years.

Out on the football field, Roberto and Tsubasa practice football together and later they return home where they're greeted by Natsuko. They talk about Roberto's football practice with Tsubasa and about the medical report concerning his retinal detachment. While heading to school, Ishizaki and his fellow teammate practice dribbling on their way to school. In school, Okawa announces that the Shutetsu's football team is having a practice match against Mizukoshi. Excited, the Nankatsu football team decide to watch the match.

At the playing field, it's noted that Genzo isn't there. It's revealed by Urabe that he's busy diligently practicing in his home. The practice match starts and the gameplay by Izawa, Kisugi, Taki, Takasugi impress the Nankatsu team. In the end, Shutetsu wins the practice match. Although the Nankatsu team is hesitant due to the Shutetsu team's skills, Tsubasa openly proclaims they'll be worth beating. Hearing this astounds his team and Hanji too.

That night, Genzo diligently continues his practice. At Ishizaki's home, he reflects on Shutetsu's and Tsubasa's football skills. This gives Ishizaki an idea and contacts someone with his cellphone.

The following day, Tsubasa continues his training with Roberto and they're soon joined by, the rest of the Nankatsu team. They plan on practicing together to prepare themselves for the upcoming Inter-School Tournament. With the help of Roberto, the team dramatically improves their football skills and the day of the tournament steadily approaches.

Giving Tsubasa one last lesson before the tournament, Roberto trains Tsubasa as a goalkeeper and uses his several shos against him. In the end, however, Tsubasa was unable to catch a single one of them, but is happy to have learned from his experiences as a goalkeeper. Heading home, Roberto and Tsubasa run past Misaki and his father making Misaki ponder who Tsubasa is.

Meanwhile, Genzo continues his arduous training regimen, managing to stop two balls at once.
