Yayoi Aoba (青葉 弥生, Aoba Yayoi) is a support character in the Captain Tsubasa series. She is a good friend of Tsubasa Ozora and Sanae Nakazawa and the girlfriend of Jun Misugi.

Biography[]

Memories 3[]

Yayoi Aoba was a classmate of Tsubasa Ozora in 5th grade of elementary school, being the first person to ever care to befriend him while no one else did since Tsubasa was being viewed as an oddball because of his fixation with the ball and thus estranged by his classmates[1]. Thanks to the new friendship between them, formed at the start of the 2nd semester of grade 5, Tsubasa was invited to Shumei Gakkan junior high where Yayoi's brother Hideto captained a school team, just so he could play football[2], and that was where Tsubasa's genius got recognized by everyone including the team coach.

Several months passed with the two youngsters growing close as Tsubasa became a regular face in football club practice with his seniors at Shumei Gakkan (where he intended to enter once completing elementary school, yet a bit skeptical because it's a private establishment that required an entry test, but study is Tsubasa's weak point), and during this time Yayoi gradually developed feelings for him. Once she insisted on having a look around his "super football dedicated" room, being unable to suppress her curiosity hearing Tsubasa talked about it when they first befriended[1]. Yayoi teased him many times as they talked together and even joked about a married life with him[3], which Tsubasa obviously turned down with embarrassment, earning a hearty laughter from her.

Little Yayoi never got a real chance to confess to Tsubasa as the Ozora decided to leave their former home and moved out at the end of school year, during Spring break, in order for Tsubasa to fully develop his talent in Shizuoka - the established football kingdom of Japan. She attempted to tell him right in their last meeting, but Tsubasa didn't hear her love confession. Shortly after that, due to the nature of her father's work, the Aoba family moved out to the hilly residential section of Western Tokyo, where she met another special boy, also a football genius, who would eventually become an essential part of her life: Jun Misugi.

According to Captain Tsubasa J, Yayoi was bullied when she transferred into Misugi's elementary school and eventually broke down crying in class over it, but Misugi stood up for her and she became the Musashi FC manager to thank him. This is portrayed differently in Memories itself: when she arrived to Misugi's class she was given the seat right next to Misugi, and a bunch of girls planned to bully her for it, but Misugi nipped that in the bud by inviting Yayoi to the team half to protect her from the girls (known for bullying any other girls who were close to him) and because the team was in dire need to a manager.

Captain Tsubasa story[]

Yayoi was a former manager of Musashi FC and Musashi middle school before she later became a medical student together with Jun Misugi.

She is a girl with shoulder-length hair and wide brown eyes, considered to be very pretty. Her hair color varies: she's red-haired in the first anime series, and brown-haired elsewhere (though the exact shade of brown depends on the series). Her hair has grown much longer, almost waist length presently.

Yayoi in Rise of New Champions

Yayoi and Sanae Nakazawa became friends despite their odd first encounter, going as far as telling her that she and Misugi were pretty much dating in Middle School before she ever told Tsubasa Ozora. She also noted that Sanae was still to confess to Tsubasa before the 16th Middle School tournament started.

Battle of World Youth arc[]

In Battle of World Youth, as Yayoi was preparing as an assistant nurse, she willingly offered to provide personal care to Kojiro Hyuga's three siblings at home and Ms. Hyuga at the hospital in Tokyo (thanks to Misugi's recommendation). With this help, Hyuga was able to play with ease in the AFC Youth Championship against China Youth.

Rising Sun arc[]

In Rising Sun, Yayoi mentioned that she was waiting Misugi to propose to her. It seems, however, that Misugi's persistent health problems may be the biggest obstacle. She's also best friends with Yoshiko Fujisawa, who is Hikaru Matsuyama's fiancée. Nonetheless, after the outcome between Japan and Germany (who were still playing at the time), Yayoi decided on her own that she'd stay with Misugi, and she'd support him all her life.

Personality[]

Personality-wise, Yayoi is a very kind, charming, strong-willed and straight-forward maiden who has also proved herself an optimist, always tried her best in everything she does. As a youngster, she tended to be well-intentioned but quite insensitive to other people's feelings and thoughts; such a flaw was played for laughs when she many times triggered Sanae's jealousy over Tsubasa without even noticing it, and later much more seriously when she asked Tsubasa to let Misugi win and Misugi, once found out, was extremely angry about it.

Appearance in films[]

Since Tsubasa was not afraid of him, he befriended the dog, and also saved the girls.
